Job Description:

MINIMUM Qualifications:



Education:

Histotechnician board certification or eligible. Completion of an approved histology program and clinical histology internship or completion of an accredited two year laboratory technician training program in a vocational school or junior college.

Knowledge, Skills

& Abilities:

q Knowledge of clinical laboratory analysis, quality control, and laboratory instrumentation

q Knowledge of the principles of processing specimens for observation

q Knowledge of medical terminology, glassware, and chemical reagents

q Knowledge in each of the following areas: Histology and Cytology

q Knowledge of sterile procedures in the handling of infectious materials

q Ability to learn the operation of laboratory testing equipment.

q Ability to use a computer terminal

q Ability to recognize abnormal test results

q Knowledge of MedicalCenter policies and procedures

q Knowledge of applicable safety procedures

q Knowledge of the operation of a lab computer system

q Knowledge of instrumentation used in the laboratory

q Knowledge of specific tests used at the MedicalCenter lab in the area to which assigned

q Ability to recognize instrument malfunctions

q Ability to recognize abnormal test results and apply quality control procedures to determine their accuracy

q Ability to teach technical aspect of medical laboratory procedures to others

q Ability to communicate effectively with doctors, nurses, and other MedicalCenter and outside agency personnel

q May, as a result of skill, experience, and desire, participate in teaching technical aspect of lab procedures, instrument implementation, troubleshooting and maintenance, and test result interpretation

Licensure/Registration/Certification:

ASCP or equivalent certification preferred. Two (2) years of Histology work experience within the last five (5) years may substitute for the educational qualifications.

POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT:

To perform tests and procedures in a histology laboratory; to perform functions associated with obtaining, receiving and processing of surgical pathology specimens in patients of all ages, to maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, and to perform related duties as assigned.
